Press Release – Diver’s Night 2008
On Thursday the 4th of December, 2008, an attempt will be made for a world record in night diving. Night-time scuba dives will be made in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Svalbard and the Faroe Island, with other countries in other parts of the world also showing an interest in participating.
Approximately 3000 divers from several countries are expected to be underwater at 20:08 that day.
Tone Svee Dahl (31) from Fredrikstad, Norway, is the initiator of the world record attempt.
She coordinates the efforts of local organizers of this particular night dive, an event named Diver’s Night, worldwide.
The purpose of Diver’s Night is to promote the sport of scuba diving, to bring together scuba diving communities from all over the world, and to show how exciting and adventurous the sport is; during any season, any time of day.
Diver’s Night began in 2005 when a nation-wide night dive was organized in Norway. 351 divers participated in the synchronized scuba dive. In 2006 the participants had increased to 898, with divers from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark participating at 93 different locations. In 2007 night dives were being made in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Faroe Icelands and Svalbard, with a total of 1895 divers in the water at 138 various locations.
Both local and national press organizations have shown a great deal of interest in this event in the past years, and we hope that will continue with this year’s Diver’s Night. We would appreciate an article or feature prior to the event, as well as some coverage of the actual world record attempt itself.
